Crosby Group performed structural engineering for this maximum-security housing complex for over 1024 death-row inmates, along with all necessary support services to make it essentially independent of the existing San Quentin facility operations.

The design includes 107,000sf four-story “Double Stack” housing units, utilizing cast-in-place concrete construction. Due to the repetitive nature of the design, a steel tunnel-form construction methodology was integrated into the design to reduce the schedule and ultimately cost. Additional design challenges included addressing the highly variable site geology along with the high seismicity of the site. The site geology, which varied from solid bedrock to compressible bay mud, required a combination of both conventional and deep pile foundations along with suspended slabs and building joints to accommodate differential settlements.

The complex also consists of an additional 90,000sf of support facilities including an administration and office building, facility program support services building, complex services building, visitor processing and central treatment center.
