Crosby Group provided complete structural engineering design services for the design-build of the new Receiving and Support Center project at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center campus in San Jose, California. This 3+-story over basement, 145,000sf structural steel building met the Owner’s design objectives through performance based design which included the use of buckling restrained braces to improve the lateral performance of the building. The new Receiving and Support Center Building includes a material management dock facility, main kitchen, and additional offices for administrative functions, as well as a new tunnel to connect the Services Building to the Main Hospital, which met strict OSHPD requirements.
Crosby Group assisted the design-build team in identifying key cost saving strategies that ultimately led to the team being selected as providing the ‘Best Value’ solution. One such cost saving strategy included Crosby Group’s reevaluation of the foundation systems included in the original bridging documents. This reevaluation led to a significant reduction in foundation work for the new building by replacing costly deep piers with a mat slab foundation, improving constructability at a reduced cost.
