Fire/Police Stations : Belmont City Hall & Police Headquarters Renovation & Seismic Retrofit
Crosby Group renovated and expanded an existing 51,600 square foot office building to accommodate the City of Belmont police department and various City Hall services. This project included seismic strengthening of the building to achieve an "Immediate Occupancy" performance level. A previous retrofit had been proposed but was ultimately abandoned by the City due to its cost and severe impact to the building's occupants' day-to-day functions.
During the preliminary design phase, several strengthening schemes were evaluated to determine the most cost-effective solution. Each of the proposed schemes was evaluated in terms of estimated construction cost and impact to the building's day-to-day functions. Utilizing both linear and non-linear structural analysis, a final strengthening scheme was achieved which eliminated over 50% of those structural elements originally proposed by the previous design team which meant great cost-savings in time and money.
The final design concept eliminated virtually all proposed strengthening to the interior of the building. This allowed the owner to limit impact to the building personnel and operational systems as well as provide more usable square footage for new functions. The final cost estimate indicates a savings of nearly $2 million compared to the original scheme.
