The UCI Humanities Gateway building was one of many Design-Build Competitions for the University. The Design-Build team’s goal was to give the campus a unique structure that would be recognized as the signature gateway to the School of Humanities.
Interior spaces capture natural light through the full height exterior glazing and the interior light wells. Exterior walls are open to extend interior spaces, creating a strong connectivity between the outside and inside.
To accomplish the simplicity of this design, the Crosby Group incorporated exposed concrete floors, stairwells and walls. Careful attention was given to every detail to ensure the concrete could be placed easily and with a high assurance of quality control.
Due to the complexities and irregularities of the layout of the design, quality control was also provided by utilizing a Building Information Model (BIM) to coordinate between the design-side of the team and the contractors to minimize coordination issues in the field. This helped maintain the construction schedule and allowed the facility to open on schedule for the Fall 2009 Session. With its exposed curved colored concrete exterior, this building is an icon of UC Irvine.
