Higher Education : U.C. Davis, Robbins Hall Plant Genomics Laboratory Remodel & Retrofit
|
|
As part of the U.C. Davis Seismic Corrections program, Crosby Group performed an ASCE-31
Tier I and Tier II level structural assessment of the circa 1960’s Robbins Hall Laboratory building. This 2-story, 80,748sf
concrete shear wall structure was observed to pose a serious risk to life-safety in the event of a major earthquake and was
classified as ‘Poor’ per the University’s rating system. Accordingly, our assessment was further developed into a seismic
retrofit design that mitigated the deficiencies and allowed the building to achieve a ‘Good’ seismic rating.
Concurrent to performing the seismic retrofit work, the University undertook a renovation of Robbins Hall in an effort to
provide state-of the art laboratory facilities to support plant genomics research and facilitate collaboration. The work included
the upgrade of 13,118asf of obsolete teaching laboratories on the first floor of the north wing into modern, open, flexible and
efficient research laboratories. The remodel also included the replacement of the fire-alarm system, accessibility corrections,
the addition of fire sprinkler system in the basement, and the replacement and renewal of the major HVAC systems.
