Higher Education : San Francisco State University Residence Hall & Guest Center

Crosby Group won a competition to design-build this new 17-story Residence Hall and
7-story Guest Center for San Francisco State University. The 181,000 square foot Residence Hall houses 578 students
and contains studios and two-bedroom apartments complete with kitchens, living areas and computer access. The Guest
Center has 55 rooms for visitors to the University and also houses conference and meeting rooms to accommodate up to 400-people.
The 17-story Residence Hall was constructed using tunnel-form construction which utilizes reusable 3-D formwork to
create the repetitive apartment spaces. Additional challenges included the proximity to a major fault line (San Andreas),
which effects were accommodated within the lateral design, and the fast-track schedule which required phased design and
construction to meet the tight deadlines.
In 1989, with the construction of the Residence Hall over 50% complete, the structure weathered perhaps it’s greatest test,
the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Without suffering any significant damage, the project was successfully completed on time.
