The Tahoe City Intermodal Transit Center, located near the intersection of SR89 and SR28, provides 6 bus bays and 130 parking spaces, outdoor covered passenger waiting areas, drop-off areas, bathrooms, bike racks, ski/snowboard racks and connections to the existing trail system. Due to its location near the shore of Lake Tahoe, this unique Transit Center faced many difficult engineering challenges.

Located in a high seismic zone and subject to heavy snow loads, a structure was needed that provided for a ‘floating roof’ while providing enough capacity to resist the loads imposed by snow and earthquakes. A box steel beam spine was chosen as the ‘backbone’ of the structure, along with pre-engineered steel trusses (to be fit up within the limited construction season) to create the upturned roof shape. Vertical and lateral support was provided by utilizing steel tube shapes in conjunction with concrete walls.

Due to the sensitive ecology and local construction schedule limitations, the foundations were specifically designed as shallow elements to keep them out of the high groundwater table, thus avoiding impact to the clarity of Lake Tahoe.
