Crosby Group provided structural engineering services for a new 93,000 square foot Library and Resource Technology Center for the City of Fontana intended to provide a central gathering place and resource center for the people of the City. The building hosts a 5000 square foot auditorium for performing arts with parking provided in the basement.
The Library building consists of two wings rising from the first story podium. The space between the two wings is a grand hall with library functions and areas for art displays. The grand hall is covered by a 160ft long skylight to provide for natural light. The two wings extend the length of the building and are connected by pedestrian bridges at the 2nd floor. A two-story circular glass-enclosed reading room at one end of the building also forms a connection between the wings. The structural challenges involved incorporating the two wing buildings within the envelope of a single structure, designing the flexibly mounted pedestrian bridges and a seismically compatible skylight to span the two wing buildings.
