The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in San Francisco was built in 1962 is home to the oldest Greek Orthodox congregation west of Chicago and the oldest within the SF Metropolis. In the late 1950’s the Church commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a new facility on Brotherhood Way, their current location. Unfortunately, Mr. Wright passed away before the design was finished but his influence can be seen in the completed structure.
The building includes a 3,400 SF interior plaster dome that was intended to include a glass mosaic. Due to several constraints the mosaic was never built and the dome was not constructed to sustain the massive weight of the glass artwork.
Recently the Church has made plans to construct a mosaic of Italian hand-crafted glass tiles in the dome, to complete the original vision for the building. Each tile will be the size of a postage stamp and this installation is reported to become the largest of its type in the western hemisphere. Crosby Group was retained to provide project management and structural engineering to support this challenging undertaking.
