Office Complexes :Flint Ink Rehabilitation
Crosby Group provided complete structural engineering design services for the rehabilitation of several buildings at the Flint Ink complex in West Berkeley. The effort consisted of ASCE-31 Tier I assessments of four existing buildings ranging from circa 1950s to 1970s.
Based on the results of the assessments, a seismic retrofit was performed for the most vulnerable building at the site. This concrete masonry building was deemed to pose a significant risk to life-safety due to inadequate bracing of the exterior walls to the existing wood-framed diaphragm. In addition, a reentrant corner made the building irregular for seismic performance, thus exacerbating the risk. The seismic retrofit consisted of positively attaching the exterior walls to the diaphragms, as well as providing collectors at the reentrant corners.
Crosby Group also provided creative repairs to the barrel roof trusses of an adjacent building on the site. The existing roof truss chords had snapped due to eccentric loads at the inappropriately detailed existing connections. The fix involved shoring and jacking the trusses and installing new plated brackets to reinstate the truss chords. In addition, seismic bracing was also designed and implemented for the historic boiler house.
